  1. The Ewe arrived in southern Togo several centuries ago.  The
  2. country became a major source of slave labor.  Germany took
  3. control in 1884, followed by French and British administration. 
  4. The French portion became independent as Togo on April 27, 1960. 
  5. The population is divided between Bantus in the south and Hamitic
  6. tribes in the north.                     @
